Uncover the Impact of Allergy Immunotherapy

Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) vs. Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT)

Physicians and patients both benefit from safe, simple, and effective allergy testing and treatment

Study Overview

In 2003, Dr. Walter Canonica and his team at the University of Genoa, Italy, conducted a landmark study on immunotherapy for allergies. This study remains one of the most significant contributions to the field  in part because it contains the first long term, longitudinal study proving continuing effectiveness.

Dr. Canonica and his team observed that various modalities of immunotherapy have been utilized for over a century, starting with subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). They explored different methods including oral, bronchial, and nasal immunotherapy, ultimately concluding that sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) offers the best balance of efficacy and safety.

Key Findings

Three generations of a family, including a smiling elderly man in a hat, a young boy, and a middle-aged man with a basket of apples, enjoying a sunny day in an orchard.

Historical Perspective:

Immunotherapy modalities have evolved over the past century, with SLIT emerging in the mid-1980s.

Effectiveness and Safety:

Compliance and Convenience:

Long-term Benefits

A ten-year longitudinal study demonstrated that patients who completed SLIT treatment for allergic asthma remained symptom-free ten years later.

Impact & Applications

As highlighted in last month’s newsletter, immunotherapy offers substantial cost savings for patients. This month’s study reveals that SLIT provides additional benefits such as quicker symptom relief, higher tolerability, minimal side effects, and the convenience of at-home administration. These factors contribute to better patient compliance and overall satisfaction with the treatment, driving superior patient outcomes.
